INFECTIOUS DISEASES

SEASONAL MARCH INCREASE FIGURES FOR PROVINCE An increase during March in the number of cases of infectious diseases in the Auckland Province is shown by the figures supplied by the medical officers of health in the four districts. Eighty-five cases more than in February have occurred. According to Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer in charge of the Auckland district, this increase is purely seasonal. It is more apparent this year because January and February were unusually free from infectious diseases. The chief factors in the increase have been scarlet fever, which lias risen from 62 to 111. and diphtheria, which shows 32 cases more than in February. The Thamcs-Tauranga area *is the only one which has not shown a large increase in the total number of cases, there being but one more than in the previous month. The figures for the Auckland district reveal a total of 123 cases, the North Auckland area 42 cases, and in Thames-Tauranga 19 cases. In South Auckland 77 cases were reported. A decrease throughout the province of five cases of tuberculosis is revealed.
