HAMILTON NEWS

Members of the Highways Council forjthe South Auckland district, consisting of Mr. F. S. Dyson, district engineer of Public Works, and. 11 county council representatives, returned to Hamilton last evening from a tour of the Thames and Eastern Waikato districts. Today they will inspect main highways in the Waikato and Waipa Counties. The Hamilton Rotary Club is being represented at the annual conference of Rotarians at Chateau Tongariro by Messrs. E. G. Johnson, A. B. Collier, 11. Clark. G. Boyes and H. Valder. Twenty-three permits for buildings valued at £6,092 10s were issued in the Hamilton Borough last month, compared with 14 permits for buildings of a total value of £9,755 10s for the same month last year. Sergeant I. H. Mathieson, who left last evening on transfer to Timaru, was given a farewell by members of the Hamilton Police Force yesterday afternoon. On behalf of the. uniform branch, Constable H. M. Kirby presented the sergeant with a fine ebony walking stick. Tributes to the departing officer were supplemented by De-tective-Sergeant J. Thompson. The Waikato Mounted Rifles, who have been encamped at Hopuhopu- during the last 10 days, will return home tomorrow. Painful injuries were suffered -by ■ Mr. J. B. Davidge, of the Savoy Tea Rooms, when he fell backward, striking a concrete tub, on Tuesday. His condition is not serious.. Notification of liis appointment to the position of principal of the Timaru Technical College has been received by Mr. F. L. M. Tuck, • 8.A., B.Sc., of the staff of the Hamilton Technical College. Mr. Tuck was formerly at Auckland. In the annual tournament conducted by the South Auckland Croquet Association, which was continued here on Tuesday, the handicap singles went to Mrs. Meikle, with Mrs. Coombers as runner-up. The championship singles final was won by Mrs. Tucker, who defeated Mrs. Belgrave, the runner-up.
