BIRKENHEAD POLL

FIRE BOARD FAVOURED The question oj having the fire brigade at Birkenhead under the council’s control, or under the control of a fire board, was decided yesterday, when a poll of ratepayers was taken. The voting was in favour of a fire board by nearly three votes to one. The voting was: For the proposal, 182; against, 63; majority for, 119. Of about 1,500 ratepayers on the roll, only 246 exercised their vote. Under the Fire Board Act, the council will now ask the Governor-General to declare the district a fire district. The board will consist of two representatives from the insurance companies, two from the council, and one from the Government.
