ROXY

EXCELLENT PROGRAMME “Mexicali Rose,” the Columbia alltalking drama of love and revenge, which opened at the Roxy Theatre last night, is a vivid and accurate account of life on the Mexican border. Sam Hardy and Barbara Stanwyck appear in the featured roles. Erie C. Kenton directed this colourful picture. The plot revolves round “Happy” Manning, hard-boiled gambler, who is not too hard-boiled to have a soft spot in his heart for his younger brother Bob. “Happy” sends Bob to college, and believes that he has put him safely on the road to a happy career when he learns that “Mexicali Rose,” one of liis own discarded sweethearts, has lured the boy into marriage. The gambler does his best to adjust matters—but meets with a tragic result. The Roxy’s new programme includes a number of interesting supporting items, the chief of which is the film record of the famous Sarron-Donovan boxing match in Wellington last Saturday. The film is particularly clear and holds the interest of the audience throughout. It is especially interesting as a supplement to the views of the first Sarron-Donovan fight shown at the Roxy last week, although the second film was taken from much nearer the ring. Good views are also shown of the preliminary bouts. The picture, “Mexicali Rose,” is also being presented at the Empress Theatre, Newton.
