LEYS INSTITUTE
SERVICE FOR 25 YEARS Leys Institute, founded and endowed under the terms of a bequest by the late Mr. William Leys for the object of establishing a free public library and to promote literary culture and education, has recently completed 25 years of service to Ponsonby district. The institute was opened in March, 1905, by the Mayor of Auckland, the Hon. E. Mitchelson, and in the following year a bequest of £I,OOO from the late Mr. William Mason enabled the gymnasium to be completed. Today the institute possesses one of the best reference libraries in the country. Many societies of considerable value in moulding the character of the young have at various times had their headquarters at the institute. The social activities at present include an excellent orch' tra of over 70 performers under the direction of Mr. Harold Baxter. The wireless society has erected a complete transmitting and receiving station and boys interested are able to get instruction in its working. The Scout movement receives warm encouragement from the institute and the gymnasium is always available for their parades.
