UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS

POSITION IN AUCKLAND “We cannot compel teachers to apply for positions,” said Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, this morning, when A circular was received from the Education Department asking for information regarding the efforts of certain teachers to obtain positions. It was stated that 22 teachers who were not in permanent employment refrained from applying for three vacant positions in country schools, these being filled by teachers with lower gradings. “The teachers are merely claiming for themselves the right of choice which is apparently denied by the department,”’ said Mr. H. S. W. King. In reply to a question, the secretary stated that between 40 and 50 teachers are unemployed at present in the district, and about 200 are in only temporary appointments.
