MONEY FOR BATHS

TRAINING COLLEGE SCHEME EDUCATION BOARD’S GRANT A letter from the Education Department stating that it cannot agree to the board contributing £250 from its; rebuilding fund toward the cost of swimming baths for the Training College, was received by the Auckland Education Board this morning. Thedepartment considers that would be the equivalent of a direct grant from the Government, and that any contribution, should be from the maintenance fund. “The rebuilding fund is an accumulation over a number of years, and is not a direct grant,” said Mr. A. Burns chairman. “It is all our own money as much as any other sum, coming from the same source—the Government and the taxpayer. We cannot afford to take any money from the maintenance fund, which is now very low. Our proposal is quite within the regulations, and I consider the department is interfering unduly in this with our internal workings.” On his motion, the question was referred to the Minister of Education. The newly-appointed senior inspector of primary schools in the province, Mr. J. Robertson, was welcomed by the board this morning. Mr. Robertson, who was formerly in the Hawke’s Bay district, assumed his new duties yesterday. Permission was given the Waitoa School Committee to introduce the Nelson system of Bible reading under the usual conditions, a referendum of parents having shown an overwhelming majority in its favour. This is the 59th school to adopt the system. Representatives on the Board of Governors of the Whangarei High School, Mrs. V. Donaldson and Mr. H. W. Crawford, were reappointed. Mr. H. S. W. King was re-elected one of the representatives on the Board of Governors of the Auckland Grammar School. Subject to his consent, Mr. T. U. Wells was nominated as a member of the General Council of Education. The election is to be held on May 12. “Our Flag—lts Origin and Its Significance,” was selected as the subject of the Flag Cup essay competition for this year.
