BIG DRAPERY FIRE
EARLY MORNING ALARM IN SYDNEY HARRIS BROS. DAMAGED Reed. 9.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A fire which broke out on the premises of Harris Bros., drapers, of George Street, at about 4 o’clock this morning, spread rapidly and endangered large shopping blocks in George and Goulburn Streets. The flames leapt high into the air, and firemen from every city station were still fighting the flames at a late hour. Firemen from eight brigades effected a good save. They were assisted by a car parking area which prevented the flames from spreading along the block. Harris’s premises were gutted and the adjoining shops suffered badly from water.
The damage will run into many thousands of pounds.
