LABOUR COUNCIL VETOES STRIKE PROJECT
LONGER WEEK PROTEST Untied —By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A special Labour Council meeting defeated by 63 votes to 3S the militants’ proposal for a railway strike as a protest against the 4S-hour week, but a conference of all unions is being held nest week to discuss the position. Weak organisation in railway unions, a shortage of funds and the already existing widespread unemployment are factors in defeating the militants’ plans. The Full Court today made absolute a rule nisi prohibiting the police from proceeding further in connection with the conviction of George Gill and 17 other men, who were alleged to have been concerned in the disturbances on the Rothbury coalfield in December. The grounds on which the application was granted were that the magistrate at West Maitland who heard all the cases together had no jurisdiction to do so.
