ALEXANDER WATSON
FAMOUS PLATFORM CELEBRITY The visit to New Zealand of Mr. Alexander Watson, the famous English entertainer, for his sixth tour of the Dominion, should be welcomed with delight by his legion of admirers. Extending over a period of 20 years, Mr. Watson’s visits have resulted in an ever-increasing army of followers, all highly appreciative of his great artistry. Large audiences throughout England, Australia, and New Zealand, including the members of lecture societies and literary institutes, and boys and girls in our public schools, have keenly enjoyed his discerning interpretations of great literature —selections made with that fine feeling he possesses for what is best and most appropriate for verbal presentation. For his Auckland season, which commences on Tuesday, April 8, at the Town Hall concert chamber, under the direction of E. J. Gravestock, Ltd., the popular entertainer has arranged a fino series of programmes. At the first recital the main item of attraction is a condensation of Sir J. M. Bai'rie’s delightful book, “The Little Minister,” which gives the elocutionist excellent opportunity for the display of his amazing facility for conjuring up the various characters and scenes as they proceed through the story. Tho second part of the recital is devoted to new additions to Mr. Watson’s repertoire, including a composition of weird and mystic beauty by Walter de la Mare, “The Listeners,” two satirical sketches from the pungent pen of Harry Graham, “The Millionaire” and “The Actor,” “Laughing Ann,” a lilting verse by A. P. Herbert, of “Punch” fame; and new selections from A. A. Milne’s works, “Now We Are Six” and “When We Were Very Young.” At the second recital, John Masefield’s thrilling narrative poem, “The Everlasting Mercy,” and a miscellaneous second part, will be given. The first four programmes may now be obtained, and plans will be opened on Friday next.
