Obituary
DR. G. T. SMITH Dr. Gilbert Thomas Smith, an old and well-known resident of Paeroa, who has died there at the age of 77, was born in Bedford, England, and, after passing his medical examinations, practised in London for 10 years before coming to Hew Zealand. Before settling in Paeroa in 1900 he practised in Whangarei, Mercury Bay and Te Aroha. Dr. Smith is survived by his second wife, two sons, Mr. H. Smith, of Whangarei, and Mr. Gerald Smith, of Auckland, and one daughter, Mrs. O. J. Wilson, of Whangarei. MR. E. D. VOYSEY Another early settler in the Waikato district has been removed by the death today of Mr. E. D. Voysey, of Hamilton East. a,ged 76. Born in Exeter, England, Mr. Voysey landed at Bluff about 55 years ago and after farming in Central Otago for a couple | of years, came to the Waikato, where jhe lias remained ever since. He retired from active farming about 20 1 years ago. In 1883, he married a j daughter of the late Mr. E. D. Sweeney, of Waihou. j The late Mr. Voysey is survived by j his wife, five daughters, three sons, • several grandchildren and four greati grandchildren. MR. G. W. JOHNSON j Mrs. Alice Helena Johnson, wife of i the lat© Mr. G. W. Johnson, of Otiria, a j well-known pioneer settler of the Bay I of Islands district, has died at Kawaj kawa at the age of 84. Born at | Elthani, Victoria, Australia, Mrs. John- ! son came to Hew Zealand with her i husband 59 years ago and took part in j the gold rush to Thames, going from there to Nelson and finally to Otiria, Bay of Islands. Mr. Johnson died in 1907. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three sons, Messrs. F., T., and W. Johnson, of Kawakawa, and two daughters, Mrs. G. White, of Remuera, and Mrs. R. Reyland, of Kawakawa. There are seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. THE REV. O. R. HEWLETT The Rev. Oswald Rouselle Hewlett, a veteran minister of the Anglican Church, died at his home in Bracken Avenue, Takapuna, yesterday, after a brief illness, at the age of 75. Born in Kent, Mr. Hewlett came to Hew Zealand as a small boy, and after being educated at St. John's College was ordained deacon in 1884. and priest in ISSS. He served as a curate at Papakura, Onehunga, Opotiki, and again at Onehunga before being appointed ‘curate of Papakura in 1896. He rei mained there until 1904, when he acI cepted the position in Wakefield in ; the Xelson district. Retiring in 1913 j he went to Drury, but later moved to j Takapuna, where he regularly assisted the vicar, the Rev. W. G. Monckton. Mr. Kewlet is survived by his wife, j one son, Mr. T. X. Hewlett, ~ and three j daughters Mrs. H. Faulkner, of Xelson, ] Miss M. E. Hewlett of Victoria Valley, j and Miss E. M. Hewlett, of Takapuna.
