SOMERVILLE HOCKEY CLUB
CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Somerville Hockey Club was held on Monday evening in the Newmarket Fire Brigade’s social room. There was a good attendance of 35 officers and members. Mr. W. Newsham was appointed chairman, and in his opening remarks referred to the loss hockey had sustained in two unfortunate accidents when Messrs. Ken. Highfield, of St. Luke’s Club, and Jack Fitt. of the Morrinsville Club (late of Auckland) lost their lives. A motion of sympathy with their relatives was passed by the members standing. The annual report showed that the club had had a very successful season. The senior team was bracketed with St. Luke’s for the championship, thus making the fifth year in succession that it has been champion. It also won the Kent Cup for the seventh year in succession, and as this trophy is played for between the teams winking the championship and the Devonport Shield, it is really a champion of champions competition, and the record thus put up by the club is remarkable. The second and fifth grade teams were runners-up, and the third grado team was third in their respective championships. In the King’s Birthday carnival, Eric Watts won the 100 yards championship, and the club won the 600 yards relay championship The following players were congratulated o:n attaining New Zealand representative honours: Messrs.
