BOXING FINANCE
DO BIG ASSOCIATIONS BREAK THE RULES? DISCUSSION AT TAUMARUNUI From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. Alleging that the large associations broke the rules every day by giving boxing purses larger than were permitted. Mr. A. Venn, adviser to the Taumarunui Boxing Association, opened up a point of great interest to the smaller bodies, fit the annual meeting of the Taumarunui Association. The discussion arose through the chairman. Dr. E. Vivian, urging that every effort should be made to make the tournaments show a small profit, at least, and not r *ly on other means of financing f*>> :!io credit balance. Air. Venn .*■ that tho rules under which tho as.' ■ t tion had to work placed it at a disadvantage. Amateur boxing in New Zealand was controlled by amateurs, which sounded well in theory, but did not work out in practice. Small associations had to pay boxers’ affiliation fees, amusement tax. : nd a profits percentage to the New Zealand Boxing Council. They were supposed to get help from the council but did not. They could not get the services of good fighters because they could not get large enough houses to pay the purses. The larger associations broke the rules every day by giving purses larger than were permitted, and by guaranteeing a well-known boxer so much, win, lose or draw, as instanced in the recent Sarron-Dono-van fight.
