MR. G. NICHOLSON’S RUGBY CAREER WAS 1905 ALL BLACK i Appointed at the annual meeting of I tho Auckland Rugby Union as sol-2 ! selector for the 1930 season, Mr. G. ! Nicholson occupies that position for tho fourth time. Tie.is also a member of the New Zealand Selection Committee, and has 40 years of Rugby experience to support his decisions. Mr. Nicholson played Rugby first In tho early ’9o’s, when there was an outside League competition for boys who had just left school. There was a weight limit of Bst 101 b, and 16 teams played in the competition. Each team put in 10s, and the winners bought caps. From 1897 to 1905 Mr. Nicholson was a member of the City Club, and then, in historic 1905, he was chosen as a member of the great side to tour the British Isles. Ho played as a side-row man, and his height and reach were invaluable, particularly in line-out work. Mr. Nicholson played in 20 games during the tour. City Club claimed the All Black for one season after his return from Great Britain, and then he went over to Ponsonby. That year, 1907, and for the two years following, Ponsonby won the senior competition. Mr. Nicholson played up till 1912, when he was still with Ponsonby. In 1906 he visited Sydney with the City Club, and in 1909 with the Ponsonby Club, each team winning all its matches but one. ; After retiring from the game as a j player, Mr. Nicholson refereed for two ; seasons, in both interprovincial and j international games. taking two ; matches of the All Blacks v. New j South Wales. Mr. Nicholson has been | member of tho Rugby Union Management Committee since 1913 for all ]»nt two years. This is the fourth time ho has been appointed Auckland selector, and he has been for four seasons a member of the New Zealand Rugby Union Selection Committee, still occupying that position. Mr. Nicholson was one of the New Zealand selectors during the Springboks’ tour of the Dominion in 1921. He is still j coach of the Ponsonby Club, a posi- j tion he has held since 1907. J
