ASSAULT BY TONGAN SEAMAN “NICE GENTLEMEN ’ •You're a nice pair of gentlemen,” commented All*. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. at the Police Court this morning, when Leslie Ellis, a Tongan seaman, charged with assault, referred to his companion as “the other ' gentleman." Ellis was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Ellis, aged 28, pleaded not guilty to a. charge of assaulting Charles Harvey Kensell on March 26. Senior-Ser-geant O’Grady said Ben sell had called th© attention of tho police to the condition of a man named Herring, who was afterward fined for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. Bensell had been assaulted by Ellis after Herring s arrest. Bensell said lie and his companion Wilson, were walking toward witness’s motor-car when Ellis and another man cam© after them. Ellis had struck witness on the back of the head, knocking his hat off and breaking his glasses, whicli had cost £1 to mend. Hugh Alexander "Wilson corroborated Bensell’3 evidence. Ellis denied that he had assaulted Bensell. He grabbed him by the arm asking him what he had meant by a remark he had made. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Even that is an assault. You’re convicted. “I’ve got a job to go to,” said accused. Th© Magistrate: Yes, I know. A 14 clays’ job.
