Five Counts of Theft STORY ABOUT A FUR-COAT W edding Gift to Fiancee Press Association „ CHRISTCHURCH, Today. JOSEPH REGINALD WILSON, aged 24, an ex-constable, J pleaded not guilty this morning before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M.. to five charges of theft from shops, while on night patrol in Christchurch early in 1929.
The fir3t charge heard was one of | the theft of a fur coat valued at £2S, the property of Liberty’s, Limited, the employees of which identified the coat when produced. Gladys Myrtle Johannson, a single woman. said she had been engaged to accused and the marriage was to have taken place on June 26 last. Accused, who was then a constable, gave witness the coat prodireed, as a wedding present. The engagement was broken off and witness then bought the coat from accused for £ls. Sergeant. MacNamara said that on February 28 accused was on night
patrol on the beat in which Liberty’s ; is situated. Inspector Fitzpatrick said that when interviewed accused said the girl ! Johannson was a liar. Accused was committed for trial. ! Giving evidence on the second! charge, the woman Johannson said,; that, some frocks, allegedly stolen from a shop owned by Fanny Me-i Arthur, had been given to her by ac-! cused. Similarly cutlery, allegedly: stolen from the shop of Arthur Rose,' had been left at her house by ac-' cused. Wilson was committed fori trial on these charges also. Bail was allowed in one surety of j £2OO or two of £IOO.
