Fine Racing Seen at Manawatu Meeting

VERTIGERN’S GOLD CUP THE SWELL’S SURPRISE WIN Special to THE SUN PALMERSTOX X.. Wednesday. The autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club opened today in fine weather, antL the course was in splendid order. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £26,015, against £21.754 last year, an increase of £ 4.203. Karere Hurdles Red Fuchsia. £GGI, was a warm favourite over Aurora Borealis. £355, with both Omeo, £2 66, and Diana’s. Lad, £195, at good odds. Red Bank was the early leader and Vivo joined* him over ihe hurdles opposite the stands. with Red Fuchsia, Omeo, Diana’s Lad and Aurora Borealis following. Red Bank and Vivo maintained a hot pace and they were just in front of Diana’s Lad, Omeo, Red Fuchsia and Airtight at the home. At the last fence Red Bank. Vivo, Diana's Lad and pmeo were practically on terms, but the last-named did best to win by two lengths from Diana’s Lad, with three lengths back to Vivo. Right up fourth was Red Fuchsia (who huh none the best of the running),' and then came Red Bank and Airtight The latter is a likely improver. Autumn Plate Ball Dress, but for drawing Xo. 19 marble, might have won the Autumn Plate, in which Ben Hur drew the ace and he won nicely. Ivilligrew was first away, Mount Shannon dwelling, the leader being followed by Royal Mission and Ben Hur. The latter'shot to»the front at the end of a furlong and was clear at the home'tturni r n from a bunch comprising Zephyrus, Killigrew, Bon Ace, Ball Dress (wide out) and Pedestal. At the distance Ball Dress looked like catching the leader, but Ben Hur hung on and won by a length and a-half. Ball Dress being only a head in front of Pedestal, with Spearform, Zephyrus, Royal Mission, Mount Shannon, Fitz Quex and Joie De Val following closely. Pedestal, £sll, and Ben Hur. £3BO, were the best backed, while Ball Dress, £l3l, was at double figures to win. With a more experienced rider the last might still have won despite the bad barrier position. Prince of Wales Handicap There was a surprise in the Prince of Wales Handicap, The Swell winning at double figures, but it was a desperate finish, with the first four horses separated by less than half a length. Juggle was rushed to the front, and led out of the straight from Silvermine and Dolomite, and along the back Juggle and Silvermine were together ahead of Dolomite, Panther, Balloon, Vali, The Swell, Ruanui, Spearmiss, and Merry Damon, with Paitonu, Shrewd, and Full Feather the last three. The Swell- made a smart run near the half-mile, where Vali got stopped twice when tucked in on the rails. The Swell and Silvermine were still together at the turn for home, being followed by Juggle, Dolomite, Balloon, and Vali, with Paitonu welll back. Halfway up the running Vali joined issue with Silvermine, and The Swell and Paitonu put in an appearance nearing the judge, The Swell getting a nose decision over Silverinin.e, with Vali a head away, and Paitonu right up fourth. Then came Ruanui, Merry Damon, Panther, Shrewd, Spearmiss, and Dolomite. The unlucky runners were Vali and Paitonu, but The Swell’s form was impressive. Woodhey Hack Handicap Lord Tliomond put up a fine per-' formance in the Woodhey Hack Handicap, for which he was at a fine price. He did not get a good position in the early part, and crossing the top was outside four horses. At the home turn he had Patearoa, Just An Idea, Abbey Queen (wide out), Cook, Golden Shadow, Cadland, Paiko, Winlock, and Austerity in front of him, but a furlong from home he had the measure of the leaders, and won by three parts of a length from Golden Shadow, with Just An Idea a similar distance away, and Potoaform close up fourth. Then in a bunch were Austerity, Cadland, Winlock, Hurly Burly, and Paiko. Sires’ Produce Stakes Gesture demonstrated her superiortv when she won the Sires’ Produce Stakes, although she had to be -reminded with the whip. She carried £1,149, and Cylinder £951 and Hard Words £355 were the next in demand. Cylinder stumbled and fell at the end of two furlongs, when there was nothing near him. Hard Words went to the front from a fine start and was followed out by Autopay, Cylinder, Sir Limond and Gesture, with Lineage' tailing off. Gesture gradually gathered in the leaders and as they made the home turn she was a length behand Hard Words, with Sir Limond another length clear of Jenny Diver. Just inside the distance Gesture was. up with Hard Words, while Jenny Diver was putting in a good burst. A couple of hits with the whip and Gesture went away from Hard Words to win by two lengths. Jenny Diver failed to go on with her effort and was a length and a-lialf back third. There was daylight back to Sir Limond, Lineage and Autopay. It was a sterling performance on the part of Gesture, but the falling of Cylinder robbed the contest of most of its interest. It is now definite that Gesture will go to Sydney on Friday week, so Aucklanders will not see her in the Champagne Stakes on Easter Saturday. Awapuni Gold Cup

Vertigern sprang a mild surprise in the Awapuni Gold Cup, which was a stirring race and one noted for the wide range of the betting, but it was only after a tight finish that he headed Waterline. The leader was My Own, who showed the way out of the straight from Eaglet, Historic, Waterline and Vertigern, and thus they raced to the half-mile, where Rapier moved up, and he was actually in lront crossing the top, but then Waterline and Vertigern both passed him. This trio led into the straight ahead of Historic. Concentrate, Mv Own, Eaglet and Star Stranger, and at the half-distance Waterline held a slight advantage over Vertigern and Historic, who was coming on the outer. A good race resulted in Vertigern winning by half a head from the three-year-old, with Historic half a length back. My Own was fourth and Eaglet, ktar Stranger and Rapier lollowed, with Concentrate beaten off Both Vertigern and Waterline performed well and Historic’s finishing effort indicated his return to form. Johns ton Handicap There was a wonderful finish in the sprint, the Johnston Handicap, Consent winning und giving a doublereturn, while the second horse Dobbin, -was at longer odds. Ceremony and Melissa were the first to move, but Malayan, The Raider Consent Ceremor.y. Bobbin. Ridsemounf and Benzora was the order practicallv to the home turn. Half-way up the running Dobbin was in front, but then a swarm ot them came at the leaders and several were in the running. Consent obtaining: the verdict bv a nose from Dobbin, with Royal ‘ Duke (with out), half a head away. There were only heads between the next bunch Ceremony, Benzora. Ridsemount Rich I field. Melissa and Head Sprang. It was a remarkable finish. Te Matai Handicap Pahu was a hot favourite in the To Alatai Hack Handicap, and he did not

get a good run and was a bit lucky to get second. Marica made the pace from Airforce, and the latter was in front at the turn for home being followed by Airforce. Tunbridge. Royal Opera, Pahu and Limosa. Once in line Royal Opera, shot out and although he weakened in the last bit lie won by half a length from Pahu. with Tunbridge close up third, the latter being badly placed for most of the journey. Latakia was fourth and Mothplane. Limosa, Eelle Star and Airforce followed. Results: KARERE HURDLES Of £250; miles. 3- 9.0. L. Jarvis 1 S—DIANA'S DAD. 9.0, A. Jenkins 2 7—VIVO, 9.6, M.
