NEW CITY AIRDROME

LANDING FIELD AT ORAKEI PRIVATE COMPANY FORMED Auckland's latest airdrome is situated at Orakei, within the City boundary. In this respect it is unique, and in addition to providing business men and others who wish to travel by air 1 with a centre in easy reach of Queen Street, it should be an interesting ! rendezvous for those who wish to watch the arrival an departure of airplanes. The new airdrome has been secured by Falcon Airways, a private company which was registered yesterday for the purpose of carrying on commercial flying in New Zealand. Captain J. D. Hewett, who recently established a record by flying from Dunedin to Auckland in one day, is the promoter of the new company, which will operate the Moth airplane used by him. Commercial aviation in all its branches, the carriage of passengers and mails, the importation of aircraft of all types, and aerial photography and surveying will be done by j Falcon Airways. I One of the difficulties about travel | in New Zealand is the distance outI side the main centres for sufficient ! space for a landing ground. This also j applies to Europe, where a considerj able distance has to be travelled by j road before starting the journey by : air. Berlin is one of the few cities j with an airport in its boundary. The : old German army parade grpund on which, in pre-war days, the “all highest” reviewed his troops, is now the airport for Berlin. It is a magnificent air port, absolutely flat. The airport buildings are marvellously comfortable and convenient. A portion of the ground has been laid out. for the general public in the form of an open-air cafe with small tables over which sway, yellow and white umbrellas. Here the Germans can sit, drinking their refreshments and watching the business men arrive and depart from and to tlie big air centres of Europe. Auckland’s new airport at Orakei should provide a new source of amusement for those who wish to take short flights over the city and will be well within easy reach for business men who now take advantage of the fastest method of travelling. The airport is situated near the new Waterfront Road.
