HAND-PAINTED TABLECLOTHS

The present fashion for table mats on polished dining-tables is being challenged by handmade, handpainted silk tablecloths from Czechoslovakia An exquisite specimen in rich ivory colour, with hemstitched border, had a damasked design of leaves and pillars. At each pillar was the graceful figure of a girl, in softest grey-blue draperies with a rose-coloured girdle and rosecoloured slippers. All around the figures were grey and white doves and at the top of each pillar was a delicately-coloured spray of vine leaves and grapes. Another white damask cloth was painted with sprays of pale pink roses.
