NOW FOURTH OFFICER
YOUNG AUCKLANDER’S SUCCESS After four years’ apprenticeship aboard the Devon, a young Aucklander, Mr. R. H. Carter, at the age of 21 years, has earned his second mate’s certificate, and has joined the Somerset as fourth officer. Mr. Carter is the son of Mr. J. Carter, the secretary of an Auckland business firm, and is a King’s College old boy. He joined the Devon here four years ago, and was fortunate to be able to start right in for his apprenticeship, as a training ship course in Eng - land. Mr. Carter says, entails considerable expense and trouble to join. The practical experience he has gained while making eight “round trips” in the Devon he considers to have been of as much value to him as a special training course. He left the Devon in November last year, and was coached for his examination at the Richmond Nautical School. Two other young Aucklanders, Mr. A. Woods, son of Captain Woods of the Auckland Harbour Board, and Mr. L. Baxter, son of Dr. Baxter, of Takapuna, are also doing well in training afloat.
