CHOICE OF NEW MAN CAUSES RUMOUR HIGH COURT JUDGE NAMED Reed. 11 a.m. . SYDNEY, Today. Rumours are current that Sir Adrian Knox, Chief Justice of the High Court, will possibly be the next GovernorGeneral of Australia. Other names mentioned are: General Chauvel and General Monash, and also Mr. Charlton, a former Federal Labour Party leader, Sir Littelton Groome, late Speaker in the House of Representatives. Labour members are pressing for the appointment of an Australian, and Sir Adrian Knox’s acceptance, involving as it would his resignation from the Bench, would be particular!}’ pleasing to a section of the Labourites. Official circles at Canberra maintain the strictest secrecy. A message from London states the Domiinons Office regards the rumours as ludicrous. name has yet been submitted to the King, nor is it likely to be for some time. Mr. J. E. Fenton, High Commissioner, London, said the time was not ripe for a local appointment, which was sure to cause heartburnings.
