MIMING IN AFRICA
COPPER BELT WILL BRING NEW SETTLERS BIG CONGRESS OPENS Reed. 11 a.m. CAPETOWN, Monday. The triennial mining and metallurgical congress was opened by the Governor, the Earl of Athlone, who specially welcomed the United States delegation. He regretted the non-ar-rival of the Australians, who are to Join the later conference. The Governor emphasised the importance of the South as a gold producer to the world. Sir Ernest Oppenheimer stressed that mining must consistently encourage permanent European settlement, which was easily possible in the healthy highlands stretching across South Africa and Northern Rhodesia. The copper belt promised to be the greatest mineral discovery in our time. When 10,000,000 tons were mined annually the whites would be numbered by tens of thousands. The copper field was of the greatest importance to Empire development.
