HOMECRAFT EXHIBITION

GLEN EDEN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ORGANISES SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY The Glen Eden Women's Institute held an exhibition of needlework and homecraft in the Town Hall, Glen Eden, yesterday. This is the first of its kind to be held in the Auckland Pro vince and there was a good display. Mrs. R. Mason opened the function and Mi's. Dudley Dorman, Auckland provincial president of the Federation of Women's Institutes, presided. The judges for the various classes of work were;—Mrs. Allen, Remuera. Miss Carnachan, Miss Perrin, Mrs. Gardner, New Lynn, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Lane, Glen Eden. Mrs. Bartrum entertained the judges at lunch and afternoon tea. During the afternoon Dr. Paget, Inspector of Hospitals, addressed the meeting on maternal welfare and spoke , on the maternal mortality in New Zealand. He j stressed the proper ante-natal care and I pointed out the necessity of highly j skilled and trained doctors and nurses j

and also the establishment of more ante-natal clinics throughout New Zealand. Among the winners of the various sections were: Toys: Miss Barbara Kerr. Decorative arts, tapestry: Miss Guy. Painted tray: Miss Davidson. Rugs: Miss Guy and Miss Millen. Class V.: Mrs. Laurie. Leather work: Miss Joyce. Knitting: Mrs. Hill, Waingaro Women’s Institute. Crochet: Mrs. Valentine and Miss K. Leadbeater. Coloured embroidery: Bedspread, Mrs. Redfern and Miss Haycock; white embroidery, Mrs. Purvis and Mrs. Reiner. Children’s class: Mary Hewson and Stuart Suter. Something new from something old: Mrs. F. Morris. Miss Saran gave a dance solo and her pupils a ballet, and the pupils of Mrs. Powry, Glen Eden, entertained with part songs. Little Joyce Dorman presented Mrs. Mason with a bouquet of pink asters and dahlias. Mrs*. Dudley'- Dorman was the recipient of a bouquet of red and yellow dahlias presented by Miss Betty Huyton.
