WOMEN’S COUNCIL
PRESIDENT RETURNS FROM EXECUTIVE MEETING REPORT GIVEN TO BRANCH Miss £3. Carnahan, president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, who returned yesterday from a meeting at Wellington of the Dominion executive, spoke last evening at the monthly meeting of the Auckland branch of the need for working harder than ever for the establishment of women police. This point, said Miss Carnachan, had been particularly stressed by Mrs. Fraer, Dominion president, at the executive meeting, when speaking of the objective for the coming year. Miss Carnachan appealed to each delegate to see that the people in her district properly understood what was really meant by the term women police. Miss Carnachan explained the history of this particular fund, and said that it \vas not to be confused with the obstetrical endowment appeal now being made throughout New Zealand. The Dominion committee had promised to give £ 50. the money to come from the branches, not from the Dominion funds. The quota of the Auckland branch toward the £SO was £lO. After some discussion as to ways and means of raising the money, it was decided to hold a social gathering at which provision should be made for a bring-and-buy section early in Ap»ril. A sub-committee was set up to organise the function comprising: Mrs Howden, Mrs. Dreaver, Miss Jean Begg’ Mrs. Russell, Mrs. McNair, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. YVoods, with power to add to their number.
A remit from the Dunedin branch recommending that in view of the. dearth of trained social workers a board of social study be set up for the benefit or social workers was discussed. It was decided that the subject needed considerable investigation, and a committee was set up to go into the matr>r* Mll £?*ed Staley was appointed convener, with Miss Jean Begg Miss Tremaine.
