TO ROCKY BAY
VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB'S RACES HARBOUR EVENTS ALSO The Victoria Cruising Club held a series oi’ races on Saturday afternoon. Launches, keel yachts and mullet boats were sent on a cruising race to Rocky Bay, Waiheke, and smaller craft competed over harbour courses. Conditions at the outset were light, a slight wind coming from sou’-west, but this soon freshened to a nice sailing breeze and veered round more to the west. Later in the afternoon it changed round to a dead southerly. A feature of the racing was the fact that all starts were very close. All events started off the dredge moored outside the St. Mary’s Bay boat harbour, and the harbour races finished there. The officials in charge of the racing were:—Starter, Mr. O. Johnson; timekeeper, harbour races, Mr. A. Perkins; judge, Mr. G. L. Lay cock; timekeepers, cruising races, Messrs. W. Walsh and J. Atford; judge, Mr. L. A. Tercel. Details of the racing are: Launches.—Only three craft faced the starter, the order of crossing the line being: Areta, Young Zealandia, Xamoi. The race started at 2.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—Areta (2m), 4.19.39; Kamoi (9m 455), 4.24.43; Young Zealandia (GOm), -5.9.11. . . Result. —Young Zealandia, 1; Namoi, 2. Keel Yachts.—Queenie led the bunch across the line, to be followed by Dolphin, Mizpah, Speedwell, Cynthia and Iris in that order. Proceeding down harbour, Queenie was holding her lead with Speedwell close behind. The race started at 2.40 p.m. The finishing times were:—Queenie (scr), 4.55.33; Speedwell (scr), 5.1.54; Iris (10m), 5.13.15; Cynthia (12m), 5.13.16; Dolphin (24m). 5.22.7; Mizpah (20m), 5.27.10. Result.—Queenie, 1; Doiphin, 2: Cynthia, Mullet Boats.— PI, L and X classes were sent away together. P’irst over was Starlocli, then came Matariki, Rakoa, Spray, Omatere, Starlight, Wairere, Marie, Mowhai, Manu. Otira, Why Xot and Awatere in that order. Starloch continued to lead down harbour, and in close attendance were Spray and Omatere. The race started at 2.50 p.m. The finishing times were:—H Class: Spray (11m), 5.4.55; Omatere (l£m), 5.9.15; Starlight (2|m), 5.9.32; Starloch (scr), 5.9.45; Awatere (2£m), 5.10.25; Why Xot (10m), 5.16.25. Result. —Spray, 1; Why Xot, 2; Star- ; light, 3. L and X Classes’ finishing times were:— j Marie (scr), 5.10.41; Rakoa (scr), 5.15.12: ; Malua (8m), 5.18.27; Wairere (7m), 5.21.42; : Otira (6m), 5.22.36: Matariki (9m), 5.24.4; ! Mowai (9m). 5.25.15. Result.—Malua, 1; Marie, 2; Wairere, 3. j S Class.—First across was Xamu, the I order of the others being Rangatira, Waitoa, Aratu, Rangitiki, Sceptre and Swiftsure (limin late). The race started at 3 p.m., and the finishing times were:— Sceptre (4min), 4.36.25; Xamu ((scr), 4.37.31; Aratu (2min), 4.45.1*2: Rangitiki (smin), 4.49.59; Waitoa (6min), 4.52.47; Rangitira (smin), 4.54.4. Result: Sceptre. 1: Xamu, 2; Aratu, 3. T Class.—The order of starting was: j Manu, Shalimar, Ramona, Resolute. The race started at 3.10 p.m. and the finishing I times were:—Shalimar (scr), 4.47.44: Ramona (3m), 4.52.42. The others did not ! Result: Shalimar, 1; Ramona, 2. Y Class.—Cupid was first, and then came Rahiri. Opali, -Fay and Oreti in that order. The race started at 3.20 p.m. and the finishing times were:—Opah (lm) 4.57.47; Rahiri (4m), 4.58.16; Fay (3m), 5.2.21: Oreti (12m), 5.7.40; Cupid (sm), 5.19.54. Result: Rahiri, 1; Oreti, 2; Opah, 3. V Class—Wild Wave led the pack across the line, to be followed in order by Desdemona, Surprise, Scud, Ranui and Avro. The race started at 3.30 p.m. and the finishing times were: Surprise (scr), 5.9.33; Ranui (sm), 5.16.11; Wild Wave (4Jm), 5.23.1: Avro (71m), Desdemona (11m), 5.27.4. Scud did not finish. Result: Surprise, 1; Ranui, 2; Desdemona, 3.
