Helensville Wins

FINAL OF PENNANT BOWLS Club and Inter-Club Matches F OK the second year in succession the Helensville Bowling Club has Avon the Auckland Bowling Centre’s pennant competition. Oil Saturday the club defeated the Auckland < lub in the final of the series. Club and inter-elub matches were continued on greens throughout the City and suburbs.

The winners of the Auckland Centre's huge inter-elub pennant competition involving the participation of no less than 1.104 bowlers from the respective clubs here has been finalised. On Saturday, amidst glorious bowling weather and on greens running ideally fast and true, the tussle between the winners of the A Section -—Helensville —and the JB section— Auckland —vvas contested, the former coming out victorious for the second season in succession by winning three games out of the four staged and tieing on the fourth—a most creditable performance. For the reason that the splendid little club had doubled its quota ot' entrants this year, the victory is all the more meritorious. At the close of last season, the committee of the club asked the centre to permit an increase of rinks from two to four, with the provision that if the full number of players required could not be mustered permission would be granted to include the necessary substitutes. This fine sportsmanlike spirit was immediately recognised and it was seen thereby that the club would be taking the big risk of jeopardising its chances of again winning the penrant. However, enthusiasm among' thfc members of the club ran at the highest for the competition and substitutes were unnecessary. The members themselves fill all the engagements. Moreover, in contradiction to the wildest hopes, the club has annexed the emblem of bowling prowess, among all the clubs in the centre again for this season, thereby adding much lustre to tl:o victory. On Saturday the members of the club who participated in the games at Auckland took home the big blue and white pennant a it i much pride for the second season. HOW THEY PLAYED In fairness :o the participating members of the Auckland Club, it must be said that although they received a sound trouncing by the number of games lost, in no less than three games the loss was on the last head. In the game, W. Matheson, O. A. Allan. H. Tt. Allan, J. F. Bailey (Auckland) V. Pa ton, Brock, Strong. T. McAlister (Helensx-ille). the former team made a very good showing. On the seventh head the scores were 11—7 in their favour. On the 12 th head they were 1!) all: on the 16th head the Jeam lay a comfortable four, when McAlister drove with a speculator and got two shots out of it. On the 20th head McAlister again saved the sedre with his last bowl, and also on the final head th* Auckland team lay two up when McAlister trailed the kitty, and then only won on a measure in

which there was a bare quarter of an inch to spare. In the game, Wyatt, K. S. Macky. Davidson. H. S. Gilles ( Auckland) v. Pastier, Day, Ellett, C. G. Sandin (Helensville), the Auckland team did not commence scoring until the sixth head; they were equal on the 13th head; on the 19tli head the scores were 19—15 in their favour; while on the 21st head the Helensville team had four shots to get for a win; on the change over four were laying against them and Sandin managed to rake the game out of the fire. 19—20. In the game, Armitage, Haeket, Price. E. Lyell (Auckland), 21, v. Wilbon, Williams, Plummer, Garment (Helensville). 25. Auckland led up to the last head. The Helensville team then scored a five, and ran out winners. Again in the game. Williams, Bourkc, Neil. Osmond (Auckland), 13. v. Stanaway, Walters, Matheson, Smith (Helensville), 14, the Auckland team played excellent bowls and despite the small scoring could easily have gone out the winners. Indeed the total points scored on both sides showed that Helensville exceeded Auckland by only six points in the four games. Probably this marks one of the closest tussles that has been staged in this competition. Club Games WEST END .Percentage Fours.—Cox. Hardier. McEwan, IMasgs, 2;:, v. Collin. S.
