From Our Oxen Corresposdeat P AERO A, Saturday, At the second annual meeting of tb# Paeroa Ladies’ Physical Culture Club, the following officers were elected: President, Airs. W. Barclay; secretary and treasurer, Aliss N. Hayward: committee, Alisses Say, Argali. C. Swann, IF. Hayward and J. Bellamy. * * * i The Paeroa Amateur Swimming Club { held its finaJ carnival on Thursday evening, the attendance not being as large as was expected. Some excellent contests were witnessed. Durixig the evening AJr. J. Bonham, of Hamilton, assisted by Air. N. Ross, also of Hamilton, gave an exhibition of plain and fancy diving, which was received with much applause. A meeting of women was held O® Thursday afternoon to assist in tb« campaign for raising the sum ot £25,000 for the establishment of Chair of Obstetrics at the Otago University. Airs. K. Gordon, wife of Dr. Kenneth Gordon, of Auckland, addressed the meeting. She stated -hat the Obstetrical Society of New Zealand was calling the attention of tb« ! public to the urgency of reorganisioS the midwifery department of the Zealand School of Aledicine and an appeal for the purpose of raising the necessary funds had now been launched. A sura of £25,000 was aimed at. The Government would subsidise all moneys collected. The Government had diready granted a sum of £ 50,000 to build a maternity hospital in Dunedin as part of the scheme, where medical students in future will study under modern conditions with Ihe best tuition. The advantages of the scheme would have far-reaching results. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Gordon, and it was decided that th© members of the local Plunket Society should make a house-to-house canvass ' j for subscriptions, the work to be i undertaken next week.
