SURF CONTEST
S. BACON WINS CUP FOR INDIVIDUAL WORK MILFORD COMPETITION A competition in individual rescue work was held yesterday afternoon at Milford Beach by the Milford Surf and ! Life-Saving Club. The contest was the first annual competition for a cup given by Mr. J. S. Hill for proficiency in individual work. Mr. A. C. Faulkner, the judge, gave points as follow: I S. J3acon and T. Hayward, 51£ points each; F. Wells, 51; F. Marriage, 50. The eight entrants had to swim 10 yards with a “victim” by each of the five methods for holding struggling victims. Points were allowed for time, tlie efficiency of the holds in ensuring the safety of the assisting swimmers, and the effectiveness of three methods of release. The tie between Hayward and Bacon was determined on time. As Bacon performed the test in lm 20 4-5 s against Hayward’s lm 59 4-ss, he was awarded the cup, which was presented to the winner by Mr. HUT. Under the Auckland branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society, a contest will be held at Milford next Sunday afternoon for land drill. Teams of six will compete for the Pirate Shippe Plate. The entrants are from Takapuna Surf and Life-Saving Club, Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and LifeSaving Club and. the Milford Club.
