ENDOWMENT APPEAL
ACTIVITIES IN THE AUCKLAND DISTRICT ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING AT WAIUKU An enthusiastic meeting in connection with the endowment appeal was held in Wesley Hall, Waiuku, on March 21. The chairman of the Town Board, Mr. A. James, occupied the chair, and introduced the speakers. Dr. Buckley Turkington and Mrs. A. Kidd. At the conclusion of an interesting address, a strong committee was formed, Mrs. A. James being elected president, and Mrs. N. R. McElwain secretary and treasurer. Collecting cards will be issued immediately, and it is hoped that the sum required for the district’s quota will soon bo forthcoming. PADDY’S MARKET AT otorohaNga The Paddy’s Market held on Friday in aid of the Otorohanga quota toward the appeal being made by the Mew Zealand Obstetrical Society, was a great success. The stalls were arranged under an awning outside the Town Hall, while luncheons and teas were served in the supper room of the hall. The various guessing competitions, nail-driving contest, croquet, bobs, etc., brought in much money to swell the day’s receipts. During the afternoon Mrs. J. C. Rolleston, of Te Kuiti, declared open the new Plunket and rest rooms, which have been built as an annexe to the Town Hall, Mr. F. O R. Phillips, chairman of the Town Board, having introduced Mrs. Rolleston to the audience. Mrs. Arthur Tait, president of the local sub-branch of the Plunket Society, spoke of its aims and objects and the purposes of the new rooms. Mrs. Rolleston congratulated Otorohanga on the excellent effort made to raise funds for the erection and equipment of such fine rooms for the use of women and the work of the Plunket Society, and emphasised the advantage of small country townships sending a delegate, as Otorohanga had done, to attend conferences in the larger centres and learning what work the Plunket Society was doing in the big cities of the Dominion. Mrs Rolleston then formally unlocked the door and declared the new rooms open. MOUNT ALBERT COMMITTEE A meeting in the interest of the obstetrical appeal was held in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Mount Albert Road, on Thursday afternoon, when Dr. Hilda Northcroft gave an address. A committee was formed, which met on Friday night at the home of Dr. Gladys Montgomery, New North Road, when Mrs. Smythe was appointed convener, and Mrs. Ohms, hon. secretary. Ways and means of raising fund 3 were discussed, and it was decided to hold a card evening, and to issue collecting cords to members of the committee. Other social gatherings were arranged by those who were unable to canvass. MANUREWA LIST OPENED A successful meeting of women, convened by Mrs. F. Whyte, was held in the Manurewa Town Hall in connection with the obstetrical appeal. Mrs. C. E. Maguire gave a very interesting address on the aims of the drive. Other speakers were Mrs. Burgess, president of the New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League, and Dr. Campbell Jenkin, of Manurewa. It was decided that a committee be formed to canvass the district. Mrs. A. C. A. Sexton was elected chairwoman, and Mrs. F. Whyte secretary and treasurer.
