CONDUCTED BY Phar Lap’s Brother ' Xightguard is the name registered for the yearling colt by Night Fluid from Entreaty, hence an own brother to the champion, Phar Lap. Out of Luck Xea Lap, the two-year-old full-sister to Phar Lap, had the misfortune recently to pick up a nail in one of her feet while exercising, and consequently has had to be eased up in her work, j This is unfortunate for J. M. CamI eron, for another pupil in the cliampion Hunting Cry was recently put aside. 1 ’Chaser Doing Well Muunga is gradually hardening up, reports a Hastings scribe, and by Wanganui J. Griffiths will have his ’chaser as forward as any of the cross-country horses. Battle Torque Leased All-. W. 11. Gaisford has leased I Battle Torque (Martian —Torquato) to j Air. T. L. Whelch. Battle Torque, I who is a full-sister to Martial Dawn, j Torquay, Gauntlet and Torque, I started five times this season for a | second and a third. She has been I racing for nearly three seasons, and so fur has not succeeded in breaking I her maiden status. Both In Work Again | Brown Sugar has just about fully j recovered from her foot trouble j which prevented her from fulfilling her | Napier Park engagements, and is I now a daily visitor to the Hastings | tracks, and if anything, looks much I better for her enforced let up! Queen’s Choice, who has been suffering from | a similar complaint, is also back in | steady work, and - will be a competitor at Hastings. Another Possibility My Own ran a most creditable race ! in the Thompson Handicap for fourth j position, beating quite a few of the top-notchers. This filly is above the ; average, and it will not be surprising to see her collecting the G.N Oaks at Ellerslie during Easter. Rich Harvest Sold A patron of H. Green’s stable has purchased from Air. D. J. Barry, of Gisborne, Rich Harvest, at a price said to be in the region of 100 guineas. At this price the sun of Autumn and Accumulation should prove anything but deal*. Later on it is quite on the cards this gelding will be tried over fences. Arrow Lad Spelling The consistent Arrow Lad is at present enjoying a spell on his owner’s (Air. E. W. Collins) property at Palmerston North. It may be some time before he will be put into work again as his owner reckons that the son of Arrowsmith has justly earned a good Gesto's Brother A full brother to Gesto, but a bay in colour, is now in constant work again at Hastings. This two-year-old is ths best part of 17 hands, and it is on the account of his size that he was not tried earlier. Fie shapes very well, and when in work before on one occasion finished ahead of Jenny Diver in a three-furlong gallop. Improving With Racing Merry Cry, the younger fullbrother to Hunting Cry and halfbrother to White Fang, was taken through to Trentham and raced, but merely by the way of education, as he ! has not been in real work a great length of time. The trip has brought him on nicely, and by Hastings one should be able to form a definite opinion as to whether he will possess the galloping ability of his two relatives. At the present time he certainly impresses as being much more robust than either of the two abovementioned relatives. A Family Trait Air D. H. McLeod, of Hastings, recently purchased the yearling halfbrother by Hunting Song to King Wanga. The youngster is a roan in colour, and looks as if he will come to hand quickly. Both King Wanga and his half-brother evidently take their colour from the female descent, Re wanga was a grey. Tauhei, dam of Re wanga, was also of the same colour, as was Vivandierre, who produced Tauhei, while Gorgi Althaea, and Alice Grey, maternal ancestresses, were all greys, thus showing their virility, as the bevy of stud dames above referred to were got by sires • who were not grey in colour.
“EARLY BIRD” Fractious Horses At a meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club last week the secretary was in- | structed to frame a remit to the conference dealing with fractious horses at the post and the erection of a "rogues’ pen” for such horses. A German Owner The German owner, Baron if. A. von Oppenheim. for whom the Australian jockey, J. Alunro, is to ride this season, came out on top of the winning owners in his country last season, his representatives having secured stakes amounting to £ 21.000. He also occupied a similar position in the two preceding seasons. Ascot Gold Cup According to advice received in Sydney from London, Lord Derby’s Fairway is favourite for the Ascot Gold Cup. The Australian-bred horse Strephon, owned by Mr. S. Green, of AJelbourne, is third favourite. In George Price’s Stable At the Aloorefield (Sydney) meeting, George Price turned out a winner in Rhonite, who prevailed in the First Division of the Juvenile Handicap. The youngster, who is owned by Air. C. H. J. Schmidt, cost 1.300 guineas to secure as a yearling. He is speedy, as he registered a time record for the course by covering the five furlongs in 1.31, I scoring by a length and a-half. For Westmere Stud The brood mare, King Cup. who at the dispersal sale of the late Hon. Norman Falkiner was purchased on account of the Westmere stud master. Air. J. Donald, has a filly foal at foot by Crowdennis and has been served by that great Australian performer Gothic. Another stud dame purchased on account of Mv- Donald was After Glow, who has a filly foal at foot by Spearhead and who has also been associated with him. They were not expensive purchases, as After Glow made 350 guineas, while King Cup brought 30 guineas less. Half Sister to Duo Airs AL A. Perry has given the name of Gold Pit to the rising two-year-old filly by Cockpit—Gold Bound. The youngster is a half sister to Duo and Outward Bound. She has also bestowed the appellation of Poi Girl to a rising two-year-old daughter of Cockpit and Flula Girl, who is consequently a half sister to Tea Bell and Alori. Win for Little Chit Pamona, who, under the cognomen of Chit, used to carry the colours of Air. V. Riddiford in the Dominion, was among the winners at Mentone; (Victoria) meeting lately, the award coming her way in the Newmarket Trial Stakes, six furlongs. She is one of the foals of the English-bred mare Mlnona, by Paper Money. Pamona was made a good favourite. She fully justified the opinion of her supporters as she conquered by a length and a-half, running the three-quarters of a mile in 1.14. King's Cup Meeting Owners having a notion for a shot at the King’s Cup, for which the race is to be run on the South Australian Jockey Club’s course at Morphetville on May 17, should note that entries must be in by Tuesday, April 1. At the same time nominations will be taken for the Goodwood Cup, £I,OOO, six furlongs, run on May 10, and for the Adelaide Cup, £2,000, 1 mile 5 furlongs, run on Alay 14. The King’s Cup, £I,OOO. with a gold cup, the personal gift of H.M. the King, is run over lft miles, the conditions providing for a maximum weight of 9st 51b, and a minimum of 7st. Weights for all three.events are to be declared on April 15, and there are no penalty provisions attaching to the King’s Cup.
