AT WHANGAREI

FIRST DAY’S HANDICAP' AN INTERESTING LIST The appearance of the handicaps for the first day of the autumn fixture of the Whangarei Racing Club draws attention to this popular gathering, which is set down for Thursday and Saturday, April 3 and 5. The Auckland provincial circuit if ®t drawing to a close, and the Whangarei and Waikato meetings will sec rhe curtain rung down upon what has been a rather remarkable series of fixtures on the country circuit—remarkable in many ways, but more so bj reason of the wonderful racing provided. Acceptances for the first day at Whangarei close at o p.m. next Friday with the secretary, Mr. T\ L. Gunn, Whangarei, or at the same time with Messrs. Blomfield and Co., High Street Auckland. F. J. McManemin's handicaps are as follow: . PORTLAND HACK HANDICAP Of £125; 6 furlongs

Willonyx . S 8 Joy King on the Mat The Canterbury Park (Sydney) meeting recently saw Mr. A. B. Williams's off-cast Joy King in action, with the result that, starting second favourite, he ran third in the last race of the day, a nine-furlong event. He, however, seems to have attracted the attention of the stipendiary stewards, and an inquiry into his running was opened on the course, the result of which has not yet reached us here. In his recent starts at Moorefield and Ttosehill, Joy King had not been prominent, but at Canterbury Park statements were circulated that Joy King was a serious rival of Autumn Balloon in the Ashbury Handicap. Neither horse took any outstanding part in the finish, although Joy King occupied the minor place. In the early part of the race he saw all that was going on. but along the back he improved his position a little. He was, however, still many lengths in the rear entering the straight, and his chances were not made easier by his running wide.
