FLIGHT FROM INDIA

CHAWLA MISSES PRIZE, BUT GETS GOVERNMENT GIFT CONGRATULATIONS—AND £560 British Official TUircJess RUGBY, Saturday. Mr. Chawla, the young Indian who flew from Karachi to London, 5,000 miles in 18 days, and who is only 17, learned to fly in England.* He does not qualify for the prize of £SOO offered by the Aga Khan, which is for the first solo flight by an Indian between India and England, as he was accompanied by a mechanic, Adsey. However, a message from Delhi says the Government of India has made a grant of 7,500 rupees (about £560) to Mr. Chawla, as he is the first Indian to accomplish a flight from Karachi to England. The Gover-nor-General, Lord Irwin, personally cabled his congratulations to the airman.
