UNITEDS OPTIMISTIC
CHOICE OF CANDIDATES SELECTION DEFERRED Confidence was expressed by members of the United Party today. Executive members assembled this morning for a special meeting, at the party rooms, in Swanson Street, to consider the situation caused by the resignation of Mr. Jenkins. The possibility of a political fray had “perked up” members, and they were in attendance some time before the hour fixed for the meeting. An excited half-hour was passed in discussing the potentialities latent in the situation and the consensus of opinion was. that, under the circumstances, Mr. Jenkins had done the best thing. Members admitted that they had been taken somewhat by surprise in the announcement of Mr. Jenkins’s decision to resign his seat. The meeting had before it the names of at least six members willing to carry the United banner in the approaching fight. However, as some of the executive members were out of trim aud unable, owing to the short notice of the meeting, to be present, but desired to have a voice in selecting the party representative, a selection from the nominees was deferred until early next week. ' Interviewed after the meeting; the chairman, Mr. Jonathan Trevithick, said the meeting had resolved that “there should not be any publication of the business transacted, but that as soon as an official attitude was adopted aud a candidate selected, the information would be made public immediately.” Shortly after the meeting had ended the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy arrived and had a few minutes private conference with the chief officials of the organisation.
