NEW LEASE OF COUNTY LAND MUST PAY SOME RATES New terms of tenure of county land, on which the Pupuke Golf Club’s course is situated, were granted by the ‘Waitemata County Council yesterday as a result of a deputation from the club. The 10-year existing lease, which was to expire on December 31, 1934, was cancelled and a new lease of the property was granted to the club foi’ a similar term commencing from October 29, 1928. The rental was fixed at £l2 10s a year, and a slight alteration was made in the ground fees charges. The club deputation, comprising Messrs. E. E. Gn mwade, J. E. Close and A. Goldwater, sought information from the council concerning the renewal of its lease and its liability for rates. Mr. Grimwade pointed ou that, o ■ of the council’s offer to grant a new lease, the club had developed and improved the course, financing the scheme by issue of debentures. It now appeared the club had not kept faith with the debenture holders as the new lease, forwarded to the council three months ago. had not yet been executed. The club had not paid rates hitherto, and the existing lease did not require them, but nevertheless the council had, in December last, demanded £SB rates and had since notified the club that, unless the amount was paid by March 21 a summons would be issued for the recovery of these dues. The club executive held there was no liability for rates and no assessment had been supplied to the club before the rate demand was issued The rates had been assessed on a value of £3,970. which was approximately the freehold value of the I la <~v G O’Halloran expressed appreciation of the club’s work in improving the ground, but considered that some contribution should be made toward the cost of maintaining roads in the vicinitv of the course.
