SCHOOL SWIMMING

INITIAL AUCKLAND CARNIVAL NEARLY 1,001) ENTRIES One of the biggest swimming carnivals ever to be conducted in Auckland —and the initial venture 'of the recently formed Auckland Public Schools’ Amateur Swim* ming Association—is to be held in the Tepid Baths on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening next week. The association is working with the co-operation of the New Zealand Swimming Council through the Auckland centre, and the carnival has received the approval and support of the Auckland Education Board and the Auckland Training College Students’ Association. The competing schools range from I Helensville in the north to Papakura | in the south, and in all there are 836 j entries and 520 individual competitors, as well as 5S school teams. It is hoped to make the event a permanent fixture and in time to have representatives from all the schools of the Auckland provincial district competing. ! The Herbert Smith trust has generously donated four cups for competition. Two of them valued at eight guineas each will be for the schools scoring the most points in the girls’ and boys’ events respectively. The two other cups', valued at five guineas each, will be for the schools winning the senior relay races in the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively. The association is very grateful to the trust for its generosity, more especially as it has been invited to apply for further trophies in the future if necessary. Championship certificates will be awarded to the winners of all the events. In addition to the school events at the evening carnival the Auckland Swimming Centre has undertaken to stage several competitive events which should prove both interesting and instructive to the competitors and public.
