MR. J. P. HOOTON The death occurred yesterday oZ .Mr John Peter Hooton. of Alount Eden at the age of 75. Born at Macclesfield, Cheshire, Air. Hooton was the sor of a silk merchant, and after beins educated at the Macclesfield Grammar School at which he was made ar associate of arts of Oxford he was trained in the silk business. In 1579, Air. Hooton went to Sydney but after a few months came to New Zealand and started in business ir Auckland as an importer and manufacturers’ agent. During his 50 years; residence in Auckland Air. Hootor played an important part in the musir world. Soon after his arrival he was appointed organist at the Beresforc Street Congregational Church, occupy ing the position until 1893. and after wards being appointed honorary organist. He was also organist at the Aloun Eden Congregational Choireh, and was mainly instrumental in installing pip** organs at both churches. For many years he wa*« president of the Auck land Royal Male choir. Air. Hooton was a ! member of the Alount Eden Borough Council from th; time of its inception until a 3‘ear agr. He is survi\*ed by his wife, one son and one daughter. His brother is Mr. AV. Hooton of Albany*. MR. W. C. MOUNTAIN A well-known aid highly-re-.pected settler in the Bay of Islands, Mr. AV. C. Alountain, has di€*d at his home at Purrua after a long illness. In hs younger days in Australia Air. Alourtain was a noted boxer and athlete ■ and on his return to New Zealand helped -in his father’s business as well as farming several thousand acres of land. He was a former member of the Bay of Islands County Council. The funeral at AA r aimate North yesterday was attended by a large circle of friends, and representatives of the Alasonic fraternity, of which he hrd long been a member, and local bodies. MR. F. W. MALYON The death has occurred, after a shert illness, of Air. Frederick 'Wilson Melyon at the age of 45. Born in Oxfordshire, England, Air. Malyon came to New Zealand under engagement to the AVaihi Gold Alining Company, and after holding the position of assistartengineer he was appointed to the position of chief engineer on the retirement of Air. AA*. R. Gauvain. Mr. Malyon is survived by his wife and two sons. MR. A. DEVLIN Air. Arthur Devlin, of Alatapouri, .who kas died at the age of 57, was born in Auckland, and at the age of seven went with his parents to Knaggs Hill. Alangapai, later going to AVhangarei and Kamo, where Air. Devlin was in business as a builder and contractor until the Great War broke out. He left New Zealand as a member of the Samoan Expedition and went to the AVestern Front. He was Invalided home and, being unable to continue his work as a builder, took up land at Alatapouri, where he was highly ] esteemed. ! Air. Devlin is survived by his wife, j tw’o sons, Mr. A. Devlin, of Ohakune. ! and Air. R. Devlin, of Matapouri, anti j two daughters. Airs. Aforris, of Hariilj ton, and Aliss E. Devlin, of Wbai ngarei.
