MORRINSVILLE NEWS

From Our Own Corresposdent MORRINSVILLE, Friday. The tender of W. J. Clare of £134 os 9d for the reconstruction of the Motumaoho school bridge has been accepted by the Piako County Council. The work will take about two months, and is part of the scheme for reconstructing and tar-sealing the road from the county boundary at Motumaoho to Tatuanui. The story is' being told of a sharemilker in the Morrinsville district whose electricity bill for lighting and an electric griller was found to be about £ 8 for six weeks, when the meter was read for the first time after he had changed over from the fiat-rate system. Ho explained to the Power Board men that, it was the custom to boil the family washing in a bucket on the griller all night, and the officials calculated that the griller had been in constant use for at least 16 hours a day.

Support for the proposal of Tahuna residents for an improved telephone service extending the hours to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. was given by the Piako County Council at this week’s meeting. The riding member, Cr. J. M. Stewart, said the present hours were 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and this was unsatisfactory. A petition was being forwarded to the chief postmaster at Hamilton asking for an improved service. and he asked for the council’s support.

The fish at Tokaanu are not as plentiful as earlier in the season, according to the experience of Mr. B. U. Barlow, who returned to Morrinsville after several weeks’ fishing at Bake Taupo. When Air. Barlow was there in January he landed a good many fairsized fish, but lately all the fishermen have been complaining of the poor catches they have been getting. Photographers who visited Taupo to take pictures of successful anglers had to return rather disappointed. Mr. Barlow intends to return to Tokaanu next month and will stay there until the end of the fishing season. * * *
