Chief interest in the day’s play centred on the Jones, Parsons (Ponsonby), v. Gladding, Jenkin (Carlton) game. An exceptionally large bank of spectators gathered to witness this tussle between the winners of last season and the champion pair of the Dominion.
They were rewarded by a magnificent exhibition of bowling, the like of which has not been seen in Auckland tor quite some time. The character of the game provided the highest standard of bowling from the time the first bowl was played until the conclusion of the 21st head, and proved of exceptional interest.
.„ E - E - Jones and George Gladding, the two front-rankers, gave a rare display of leading. Gladding was superior, scoring 24 points against his opponent, s 14, thus adding considerably to the ultimate win of his partner. Parsons was again seen at the top of his form, characteristically drawing to bare inches, when necessary, playing wonderful pressing shots and in driving most accurately when on the defensive. Frequently in the latter portion of the game he trailed and drove kitty with three bowls in succession. Jenkin showed some Qf the outstanding calibre of play which won him Dominion bowling honours in January last. He proved a bowler of the highest merit by being extremely dexterous on many heads when the position was against him, giving a sterling exhibition of the full range of shots; PROGRESS OF THE GAME Gladding and Jenkin placed the first score on the board, and from that time the opposing pair never levelled it up ■at any stage of the game, the final count being 23—16 in favour of the famous pair. C)n the fourth when three down, Jenkin drove the kitty to the ditch, his bowl lying within a few inches. Parsons drew a splendid saver about yard away, which Jenkin failed to beat tho score ending 5—2 in Carlton’s favour. Tho fifth head was well contested throughout, changing often with the various shots played by both* sides, unc],. ending five up to the Carlton pair —lo—2. On the sixth head the score lay against Carlton, when Jenkin drove tho kitty to the ditch. His toucher, however, went dead and he failed to draw a saving shot —10 —4. Three shots went to Carlton' on the sevehtli, followed by one on the next head to Ponsonby—l3—s. The ninth head was against when Jenkin successfully drove the kitty to the ditch, Parsons again drawing the second 1 shot to within a few inches of the boundary. On the thirteenth head, Parsons got a splendid position, although Jenkin was second shot. Parsons drew two more when Jenkin drove out his only bowl. Jenkin drew a second shot, winch was again passed through by 1 arsons. The latter drew another counter, which made a face for resting. Jenkin immediately took advantage of th drawing with his last bowl the winning shot when five down on the head—l 6—9. The fourteenth head was again interesting. Ponsonby was two down when Parsons trailed the kitty for two shots. The head being awkwardly constructed for Jenkin he made a great save by drawing the second shot—16—IQ. KEEN BATTLE On the sixteenth head, Jenkin lay three shots up when Parsons drove the kitty to the ditch. Jenkin drew a beautiful saver within about IS inches. Parsons again excelled by drawing within that shot—l B—ll. On the 19th head Parsons, when down, trailed, but the kitty caught on one of Carlton’s bowls. He then burned the head. On the replay, Ponsonby. after wonderful bowling, succeeded in scoring four shots, leaving them within striking distance of a win—2o—l6. On the 20th head Parsons fought desperately to obtain a score. Gladding, however, whose bowling was most consistent, left his skip two shots up on the change over, including a toucher. Parsons cleverly pressed it off and drew another toucher. Parsons drove, but unfortunately for him the kitty struck some of the Carlton bowls, leaving him three down. Parsons, however, again saved by drawing the second shot. The final head saw the Ponsonby pair again trying desperately to rake the game out of the fire. Gladding was equal to the occasion, leaving his skip three shots up within a few inches of the kitty, ;ind a saving back bowl. Parsons endeavoured to kill the head repeatedly, but failed. Thus ended one of the most wonderful exhibitions of the game on the green that has been seen in Auckland for some time past.
