CAR FALLS 80 FEET
CAPSIZE OVER BANK DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE From Our Own .Correspondent WHANG AREI, Today. A marvellous escape from serious injury was experienced by Mr. T. Burns, a car salesman of Whangarei, when the car he was driving capsized near Broadwood at 7.30 last evening over a steep bank SOft. high. The car somersaulted four times and was considerably damaged. Mr. Burns might have suffered more serious injury except for his great presence of mind in switching off the engine and crouching on the bottom of the car until it crashed against a tree at the bottom of the cliff, which saved it from plunging into the river belcw. Mr. Burns had been following behind a heavy car and pulled in behind the car at a corner to allow a heavy lorry to pass. The front car was some time in starting, and Mr. Burns, thinking the other driver wanted him to pass, pulled out from behind, and when about to pass the front of the other car it swung out sharply and pushed Mr. Burns’s car over the bank.
