FIFTY CHURCHES SHUT

SOVIET USES THEM FOR CAFES AND CLUBS INHABITANTS’ REQUEST MOSCOW, Thursday. Almost on the eve of the Papal mass of expiation for the anti-religi-ous persecutions in Russia the Soviet decided to have 56 more churches closed. Petitions by a majority of the inhabitants of the districts concerned stated that they were determined to close the buildings and devote them to the purposes of clubs, libraries, cafes and laboratories.
