WHARF GANG MOLESTED
TROUBLE ON TASMANIAN WATERFRONT ATTEMPT AT MOB RULE Reed. 11.20 a.m. HOBART, Today, Visiting waterside workers from the mainland, who had been working in the orchards during the fruit season, attempted to dislodge the local wharf workers from loading operations on the motor-ship Port Fremantle, and threatened that unless they were put on to replace the men, they would throw the stevedore into the harbour. They went to the ship, defied the chief officer’s order to leave, and the situation looked ugly, as the Tasmanian gang at work refused to stop until at last told to do so by their own union official. On his advice, the invaders left the vessel, but they were not allowed to work her, another gang of local men being put on to finish loading. Resentment is felt among the waterfront men at the visitors’ effort to deprive them of employment in the busy season. Feeling runs high over what is described as an attempt at mob rule.
