Council in its stand in relation to the i 1 Great South Road was forthcoming at 1 1 today’s meeting of the council. A ■ resolution appreciating the attitude j | adopted by the council with regard to j | the concreting ot the highway, and , i requesting that it continue this line of ! action, was received from the Mauku I branch of the Farmers’. Union. | Stating that the Highways Board J should contribute a much greater proportion for the forming and maintuinI mg of highways than it was at present ! willing to. the Massey and Bird wood ' Settlers’ Association complimented the i chairman of the council, Mr. J. N. : Massey, M.P., on the attitude he had j adopted in the interests of the ratej payers. The association contended i that in counties situated near large ! centres, not only were the main high- ; ways used by motor traffic from out- | side of the county, but also a great ; many other roads, which counties had i to make and maintain without assisti ance. A ratepayer also wrote commending I the council on its stand, and claiming ! that when the new road between Whangarata and Pokeno was formed it ! would carry 50 per cent, of the traffic j which otherwise would travel on the ! Great South Road. He suggested tf t ! the highway follow a route from . Pokeno through Tuakau, Pukekohe and ! Paerata to Drury. This, it was explained. had been considered when the question of route was before a commission several years ago. The chairman reported that negotiations for a larger subsidy were still proceeding.
