MOVE FOR ROYAL CHARTER SUPPORTED N.Z. DIVISION APPROVES Holding it to be in the best Interests of members and the commercial community generally for the Australasian Institute of 1 Sefcretaries to obtain a Royal Charter for the secretarial profession, the Institute’s New Zealand division, at an extraordinary meeting today, requested the Australasian council to take ;i*.-tion in this direction. The council of the New Zealand division of the institute intends, submitting such conditions as may be considered necessary to conserve the interests of .the members in New Zealand. The proposal to apply for a Royal Charter was discussed at the first luncheon meeting of the local division in the Farmers this afternoon. Mr. G. \V. Hutchison, who presided, said that the total expense involved by’ the application would be between £4OO and ■CSOO, of which the New Zealand division’s contribution would be about £4O. In reading correspondence relating to inquiries in England for the charter, Mr. Hutchison pointed out that opposition might be made from certain quarters. He suggested that certain provisions should be made to protect the interests of members of the Institute,’in view'of the fact that the granting of a charter Avould leave the door open to secretaries of experience laying claim to membership. He considered also the name should bo altered to the “Chartered Institute of Secretaries of Australia and Now Zealand,” thus leaving New' Zealand free to withdraw at any time and constitute itself a separate body. A resolution supporting the application for a Royal charter was carried unanimously.
