BIG-GAME FISHING
CATCH AT MERCURY BAY GOOD SPORT OBTAINING ! Ui Special to THE SUN MERCURY BAY, Monday. A party, fishing from the launch Dauntless, had a very successful time big-game fishing during the week-end. The party consisted of Messrs. D. N. Hay (Matamata), P. R. Gibson and P. W. Hutchinson. The “double” fell to Mr. Hay, but the fact that 11 fish were actually hooked goes to show how numerous the fish are.. Mr. Hutchinson estimates the number of fish sighted at 50. The most wonderful sight, of the trip was the attack of the fish beneath the launch, where they could be watched taking the bait. One fish seemed to take the line in his mouth and “investigate” before actually picking Tip the bait and racing away with it. The clear opalescence of the water, and the great blue bodies beneath the launch made the sight a most memorable one for the members of the party, w;ho state that the fishing at present is really wonderful. The four great fish landed by the party were much admired and each, according to the fishers, upheld the traditions of the “family” by putting up the usual “battle royal,” their broaching being wonderful to see. The grounds were probably never better than at present. Mr. Robert White, who is one of the best informed of local residents where “sea things” are concerned, speaks enthusiastically of this outing and the willing spirit of the fish.
