Cardinal Logan Wins On Favourite Track

NELSON FIXTURE TROTTING AT GREYMOUTH Special to THE SUN GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. Cardinal Logan added further to bis fine record of successes on the Greymouth trotting track today when he led the field home in the contest for the Nelson Cup, for which event he was a good favourite. The Nelson Club was fortunate in being able to hold its fixture at the West Coast l‘-ndezvous, and as a result of the innovation a great success was recorded. Fields were large and high-class competitors were seen in action, and speculation was decidedly AVi tli last year’s function held at home the totalisator figures registered £11,150 for two days, a total which was eclipsed on the opening day at Greymouth. I lie return for the meeting was £23,945. MANAWATU MAIDENS SOME RECENT FAILURES MOUNT LOGAN’S PROMISE There was a good batch of maiden pacers seen out at the Ashhurst fixture, and a few gave promise of producing something better later on. Of those which failed to salute the judge, Mount Logan appeared the best, and it will surprise the writer if the Feilding-trained pacer does not soon get 01 the winning list. * * * Aptly Named W. Head paraded a three-year-old called Whippet (Azelion —Coronado) at the M&nawatu meeting, but the youngster was nowhere near racing condition. A late foal, the gelding is on the small side, but the old general has hopes his charge will turn out all rightl No Improvement Tawa King, tralTied at Ashhurst last season threw out signs of making good with more racing, but his exhibition at the M&nawatu meeting did not suggest any improvement during the Interim, lie is by Normiston from a Tracey Rothschild mare, and while ho may some day pick up a “soft" stake, lie cannot be considered a. sound Proposition by any means. Good Breeding Teri Kingi is a green novice in Phil Green’s stable at Wanganui that with experience should turn out O.K. He is a four-year-old by Guy Parrish from Pakatoe and shows promise of possessing good speed power. At present Teri Kingi is lacking in barrier Planners, but in Green’s capable hands he will have every chance to make j Progress. * * * Good Looker A good looker is Mr. Guy. n four-year-old gelding by Real Guy from a

Franzie mare, trained at Feilding by A. E. Liddall. At Ashhurst he cut up rough at the starting gate and was badly loft. However, when on the journey the Real Guy gelding gave promise of speed development. Begins Quick—Stops Quick Von is not a good one, but he has one good asset—hopping away smartly. This gives him a chance in weak fields, but after going a mile lie crumples up to nothing. The aged gelding can never hope to reach the standard of Jiis sister', Cora Tacks. A Backward Pair _ ! larry Garnett produced two m aidi ns at Manawatu, Atholway and Queen Boadicea, but neither showed' any torni. Atholway (Eogan Pointer— Betty Bingen) lias some speed, but she is chicken-hearted and quits on the least provocation. Queen Boadicea, by Wild Native from Boadicea, has not been up long and may do better after further education. * « May Do Better Daphne Locanda. a Waver ley representative, is one that should show some improvement as the country circuit advances. Tho daughter of Brent Locanda—Lady Kothsay wont a fair race at Ashhurst and looked as if she> could bo got to a better pitch. Only a four-year-old. J. Heginbotham’s mare lias time to jnake good. Not a Stayer Still another novice from the Fending area was presented at the Manawatu fixture in Franz Gana. owned and trained by H. G. Walker. He is an aged gelding by Bingana from La Franz, and has pretensions to speed. He was started in a two-mile journey, but got the stitch long before the judge appeared in sight. Over a shorter .course he may do better. * * :jc Disappointing Mare Phil Green has an aged mare by Our Thorpe from a Dominion mare that showed some promise on its home track at Wanganui. However, when taken to the races she ran much below what her party expected, and her display was disappointing. Unless the mare can produce something more encouraging she will not be kept long in hand by her trainer. * >:< # A useful sort of novice was noticed at Ashhurst which, while he may never reach a high rung of the ladder, should make his presence felt at some of the country fixtures later on. This is Mount Logan (Logan Pointer—Edenchild), an aged gelding trained at Feilding by J. Bentley, who produced a good novice two years ago called Logan Star. The latter is now deceased, but Mount Logan will keep his trainer’s name before the public.
