BYRD’S ADDRESS
SPECIAL BROADCAST FOR CHILDREN RECEPTION POOR HERE Although more than 20,000 children in Auckland City and suburban schools listened to the broadcast of Rear-Admiral Byrd's address from Dunedin yesterday afternoon, very few were in a position afterof what it was all about. The results generally were disappointing. When the relay started the results i were very unsatisfactory, a great deal : of noise coming over the line. Acting promptly, IYA s’osed down in an effort to clear the land line, and although they were partially successful in this it was still not possibleHo follow Rear-Admiral Byrd continuously. This was largely due to the fact that he was speaking in a large hall and that he was raising his voice so that the children in the hall could all hear him. It also seemed at times that he was not speaking into the microphone, for when the official announcer spoke his words came through very clearly. The arrangements for the broadcast at this end were well carried out. North Shore pupils assembled at the Takapuna Racecourse, the City schools at the Domain, while the Training College (Epsom) and thePWestern Springs Stadium were the centres for the children of the eastern and western suburbs respectively. Large numbers of the public were also present. Arrangements for the outlying suburban schools were made by the Auckland Radio Dealers’ Association and the Education Board, and in the country districts owners of sets afforded children an opportunity of hearing the address.
