From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Monday
A meeting addressed by Dr. Buckley Turkington in the interests of the Obstetrical appeal, at Taumarunui, was well attended, and keen interest was shown in the project. A committee with the Mayoress, Mrs. C. A. Boles, as president, and Mrs. 11. Seddon-Hills as secretary, was set up to organise the appeal in this district. Air. G. R Miller, for several years stock inspector in the Taumarunui district, has received notice of transfer. His place here will be filled by Air. D. Gunn, of Westport. The second race of its young bird series from South, flown by the Manunui Homing Pigeon Club, resulted:—D. Wilson’s, The Dun, 595.7 yards a minute; R. Patterson’s, Lemington, 893.4 yards: Schroeder Brothers', Satan. 890.4 yards; J. Davis’s, Love Song. 886.2 yardsj; J. Whittaker’s Meadow Lark, 876.3 yards. The race was lor a trophy presented by Mr. D. Wilson. Next week the club will race from Palmerston North for Mr. J. Whittaker’s trophy. In connection with the suggested appointment of a joint Traffic Inspector for local bodies in the Southern part of the No. 6 Alain Highways District, the Kaitieke County Council has advised that owing to having its own inspector appointed on January, 1931, it could not enter the scheme till after that date. The monthly meeting of the Taumarunui Hospital Board decided to receive the resignations or Aliss M. Iv. Stevenson (matron), Miss A. R. Alason (sister), and Miss F. E. Reid (sister), all of the Avonlea Afaternity Home. The house committee was given power to make arrangements for the restaffing of the Home. At the monthly meeting of the Tarmarunui Chamber of Commerce, the president, Mr. A. S. Laird, and the secretary, Air. R. IT. Caitcheon, intimated that they did not intend to offer themselves for the offices for the next year. Great regret Was expressed by members. The long drawn out question of leasing a part of the Taumarunui Domain to the Winter Show Association for the erection of buildings, has at last been finalised, the Domain Board having decided to decline the request. Air. E. C. Jarrett, Government Poultry Instructor, in addressing a meeting at Taumarunui, stated that the constitution of the soil in the district rendered it ideal for poultry keeping. He made an appeal on behalf of the New Zealand Poultry Association which aimed at thoroughly organising the industry.
