CRUELTY TO CALF
CHARGE DISMISSED Sydney James Hastie (Mr. Cleal) appeared before Mr. F. IT. Levien, S.M., at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday charged with ill-treating a calf, while transporting it in a lorry with 19 others from Morrinsville to the "Westfield saleyaxds. Mr. Hollingworth, inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said that on the arrival of the lorry at Westfield on January 15, one of the calves was on the floor of the lorry, with its head under the wooden partition t in the middle of the lorry. He claimed that Ilastie, as driver of the vehicle, did npt inspect the calves frequently enough on the journey. In defence, Ilastie outlined the journey from Morrinsville to Westfield, anil said ho inspected the load on lour occasions. the last one being just prior to arriving at Papatoetoe, when everything was all right. In dismissing the charge, the magistrate said that it appeared that one of the animals did suffer, but he had to decide whether the man charged tyith the offence was aware that he was causing unnecessary suffering and pain. There appeared no reason to disbelieve the driver.
