PLEDGING OF HIRED GRAMOPHONE PROBATION FOR THEFT Pledging a gramophone which she held under a hire-purchase agreement, a domestic, aged 22, committed a theft to which she pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning. She was admitted to probation for two years, and her name was suppressed. Chief-Detective Hammond said the young woman had bought the machine a year ago on hire-purchase, and paid off about £2 of the total price of £l4 at the rate of 3s 6d a time. Then she got behind in her payments, and pawned the gramophone. “The worst feature is that she gave the name of a girl friend to the dealer,” the chiefdetective added. “She is working at a Dalmatian boarding-house, and is heading downhill rapidly.” “Major Gordon will head her off again,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Major Gordon, female probation officer, said she knew nothing of accused except that it was her first appearance before the court. Accused was placed on probation for two years, and ordered to make restitution of £5. At the major’s request, her name was suppresesd.
