HOW TO SPREAD MANURE
Generally speaking, rotted animal manure is best applied to heavy land during the w'inter digging, to very light land in the early spring, during the breaking up of the soil preparatory to the fining down of the tilth for seeding purposes. In every case quite fresh manure should be dug in during the winter. Whether the manure is being applied in the autumn or spring, the method of application is the same. Jt should be spread over the plot. Then as the digging proceeds an allowance is pushed into the trench and worked into the subsoil. A little of the manure is also worked in with the top soil as it is turned over into the trench. This is far more efficacious than the usual plan, of “sandwiching” the manure bet weep top soil and subsod. Always manure should be broken up and well mixed in with the soil, not pot down in lamps. Where only a small supply of manure is available, not enoungh to satisfy the needs of the whole kitchen garden, it might well be shared equally among the different plots, instead of one plot being given a full dressing, the deficiency being made up with manure substitutes or artificial manures.
